Last week, we were able to host a kettlebell swing workshop at Puma North America in Westford, Massachusetts.
We worked with our awesome HR contact over at Puma to set up a 45-minute kettlebell swing workshop for any interested Puma employees. Luckily, it was a gorgeous day so we got to have the workshop outside which made it even more fun!
What did we bring? What did Puma need to provide?
- About 20 kettlebells, ranging from 12kg – 32kg, PVC pipes, bands, and our sexy SOS staff members, Steve, Mike, Scott, and Anthony.
- Puma simply blocked off a section of their parking lot and provided us with a table and chair! Yup, that’s it! 🙂
- Participants in this workshop included 7 women who were energetic and eager to learn!
What happened during the workshop?
Starting out, we asked the ladies to each set up in front of a kettlebell. They all chose between a 12kg- 16kg kettlebell, but most said something along the lines of “We will never swing this, we will need something lighter.”
We giggled. 🙂
After a quick warm up of tip-toe walks, mini-band walks, dead bugs, pronated kick backs, and glute bridges, we got right into the proper way to work the deadlift with a kettlebell to groove the swing pattern.
Mike used many different cues to help the ladies get into a proper hinge position to keep them as safe as possible. At this point the comments changed to things like “Wow! This is really working our glutes and getting our heart rate up!”
This put a smile on our face.
After we coached them through the deadlift and how to hinge properly, we moved on to teach the kettlebell swing. This where the real magic happened.
We started the Puma employees off step-by-step with each woman using their chosen bells from before, between 12kg-16kg (25lb – 35lb).
However, one of the ladies picked up the proper way to swing a kettlebell so quickly that she went from swinging a 16kg straight to a 32kg (over 70lbs!) and absolutely crushed it! The other ladies followed her lead when they realized they too could swing heavier kettlebells.
What did these workshop participants accomplish?
- They got their heart rates up.
- They learned how to deadlift and swing a kettlebell.
- They had fun…at work!
At the end of the class, we spent a little extra time with the women from the workshop and it was great to answer some of their questions and see how excited they were about the possibility of learning more!
These ladies had fun, lifted heavier than they thought and took a step outside of their comfort zone.
